A second life for beautiful fabric
Our story
I’m Gabriela, the founder and maker behind Birdcraft Studio. I create colorful accessories and gifts from reclaimed fabrics rescued from Seattle small businesses, including offcuts, textile samples, deadstock, and other materials that were never meant to become waste.
My love for sewing began in childhood, listening to the hum of my grandmother’s machine while waiting for the colorful dresses she made for me and my sister. Choosing fabrics with her, mixing colors, and adding ruffles shaped the way I see textiles today. Working with fabric still feels like play.
As a Latina maker with roots in Chile, I carry a deep connection to textiles and to the stories they hold. When I moved to Seattle in 2019 and paused my professional career, I naturally returned to those roots. Around that time, I learned about the massive textile landfill in Chile’s Atacama Desert, which led me to look more closely at the impact of fast fashion and the broader textile industry. I wanted to respond in a way that felt small, local, and hopeful. Birdcraft Studio became my way of responding to textile waste with color, care, and a more joyful kind of sustainability.
Made with what already exists
At Birdcraft Studio, our mission is simple: to honor the life of textiles by giving them a second chance.
We believe fabric is more than material. It carries human effort, natural resources, memory, and cultural stories. And with so much fabric already in the world being wasted, discarded, or sent to landfills, we believe there is more than enough to create beautiful things for generations.
Instead of contributing to the cycle of waste and fast fashion, we choose to upcycle: transforming offcuts, samples, deadstock, and other rescued materials into new pieces for everyday use.
Working with reclaimed fabric means every batch is naturally limited. I design around what is available, letting the colors, textures, and patterns guide the final pieces. That limitation is part of the joy: it keeps the work small, intentional, and unique.
What we make
Birdcraft Studio transforms reclaimed textiles into colorful, functional accessories designed for everyday use and meaningful gifting. We’re best known for our ruffled scrunchies, but the collection continues to grow with bookmarks, pouches, sleeves, mending kits, and other creative goods inspired by the materials we rescue.
Every piece is made with at least 70% reclaimed fabric. The process takes time: sourcing, sorting, cleaning, organizing, patterning, cutting, and sewing. But that slower process is what gives each piece its character.
